In the area of tax-related issues, an attorney has two roles. The first is to help prevent tax problems. An attorney may help a business to help structure its organization in a way that legally minimizes its tax obligations. Individuals may consult with an attorney when creating trusts, wills or taking other steps that will affect the way their assets are taxed.
The second role of an attorney in dealing with tax-related issues is representing taxpayer clients in disputes over taxes, including disputes with the IRS.
